Newell leaves Homeland Security to become director of security for MPS

The Mustang Board of Education approved the hire of Jennifer Newell to fill the new position of Director of School Safety and Security. Newell, a retired officer for the Norman Police Department, has nearly five years as the program manager for the Oklahoma School Security Institute through the Office of Homeland Security. 

Interim Superintendent Charles Bradley is thrilled with the board’s decision. 

“Many members of leadership with Mustang Schools have had the privilege of working with Jennifer. She has been a voice of expertise for our district for several years,” Bradley said. “Her background and connections are going to take Mustang to the next level in providing safe, secure environments for our students.” Newell has been a trainer statewide for developing emergency operations plans for K-12 schools, managing risk at athletics and after school activities, crisis team training with the Oklahoma State Department of Education, school response to an armed assailant, bus operator safety and more. She’s conducted 52 risk and vulnerability assessments at public and private schools as well as technology centers. Her training has also included how to prevent crime through environmental design.       

Parent Portal is now open!
Parent Portal is now open. If you are an existing user, please log in to the service on a computer at https://ps.mustangps.org/public/. There is an issue with the Parent Portal app on an iPhone, and we encourage iPhone users to log into a computer until PowerSchool comes up with a solution. If you use the app on an android phone it should function properly. If you have issues on an android, uninstall, reboot your phone and then reinstall the app. 
If you have never had a Parent Portal account, stop by your child’s school site and show a photo ID to pick up the letter that contains your access ID and password. Then, create an account on Parent Portal at https://ps.mustangps.org/public/
If you have forgotten your username or passcode, the log in screen has options for you to recover both.  (Remember no school Monday for Labor Day!) 
Fulton steps down as board president; wife hired to teach in district
Chad FultonLong-time Mustang board president Chad Fulton (seat 5) resigned from his board seat after eight years of service, six of those as president. Fulton’s wife, Jennifer Fulton, accepted a position as a teacher in the district for the 2018-2019 school year. As per State Statute, a board member cannot have a relative to the second degree employed by the district. 
In his resignation letter, Fulton wrote that he had enjoyed serving “my community, school district, and most importantly, the students.” 
After a motion to accept his resignation, a long silence ensued before board member Jeff Landrith “reluctantly” seconded the motion. 
Member Stacy Oldham said he did not believe most people had any idea of the amount of time Fulton contributed to the district as board president.
“You have a servant’s heart,” Oldham said. 
Interim Superintendent Charles Bradley commended Fulton on his years of leadership and service he provided to the Mustang Public School District. Bradley said Fulton made all his decisions by applying the formula “Is this good for the kids? Is this good for the staff? Is this good for the community?” 
“Mr. Fulton is truly a leader,” Bradley said. “He asked hard questions and was never afraid to go against the majority to do what he believed was right. We wish him nothing but the best.”  
Dr. Jim Davis (seat 1) stepped down from the board in June, after his youngest child graduated.
“Mustang Public Schools has had the benefit of having an incredible board for years,” Bradley said. “It’s difficult to lose two great leaders in such a short amount of time, although we understand and respect the reasons why. Their departure leaves big shoes to fill, but provides an opportunity for two people to serve their community and to be part of something amazing - the premier school district on the western side of the state.” 
The Board of Education has 60 days to appoint a candidate to fulfill the remainder of Fulton’s unexpired term. To be qualified to serve on the Mustang Board of Education, the candidate must be resident of, and a registered voter of, the seat (ward) for at least six months immediately preceding the filing period. The individual must possess a high school diploma or GED, with no criminal record consisting of felonies or misdemeanors involving embezzlement. A qualified candidate also cannot have a relative to the second degree working in the district.

JROTC students excelled at Fort Sill Leadership Challenge

Emma Dilbeck leads platoon

Emma Dilbeck leads Bravo Company during opening ceremonies at Ft. Sill for the JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge.  Dilbeck was awarded the Most Outstanding Cadet of the Camp, the highest recognition given to any student during the week long challenge. She was also named the Most Outstanding Cadet of 2nd Platoon, Bravo Company, and the Most Outstanding Cadet of Bravo Company.  See more pictures here! 

Mustang JROTC Students were among 200 Army Junior ROTC cadets from 19 high schools across Oklahoma and Lubbock, Texas to participate in the JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge (JCLC) June 4-9 at Ft. Sill in Lawton. Cadets participated in athletic competitions, team-work activities, negotiated a combat obstacle course, made their way through a land navigation course and rappelled down a 40-foot tower. Cadets also competed in a marching drill and Academic and Leadership board.

Mustang Public Schools' Administration Building is on summer hours through July. The building is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Friday.
